Joseph Calabrese is a Reader of Medical Anthropology at UCL and a UK-registered clinical psychologist. His research combines the anthropological study of mental illness experiences and treatment approaches with local volunteer clinical practice in the South Asian country of Bhutan, among Native Americans, and with people having severe psychiatric illnesses in Chicago and Boston. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and has held research, teaching and clinical posts there, at Harvard Medical School and at the University of Oxford.
