Senior Counsellor, Sega Habtom, Shortlisted for Mental Health Hero Award at the Sun Who Cares Wins Awards

Sega Habtom, a Senior Counsellor at Nafsiyat, is a finalist for the esteemed Mental Health Hero Award at the Sun Who Cares Wins Awards. This recognition highlights her unwavering commitment to providing crucial mental health support, particularly for refugees and asylum seekers.

Sega's journey to becoming a Mental Health Hero is remarkable. Starting as an asylum seeker from Eritrea, Sega pursued a career in counselling to support individuals like her who sought refuge in the UK. Since joining Nafsiyat in 2007, Sega has played a vital role, leading therapy groups and providing individual counselling, offering hope, healing, and empowerment.

One of Sega's notable contributions is leading the Amharic, Arabic, and Tigrinya-speaking women's group, offering a safe space for participants to address various issues, from domestic violence to displacement and immigration, using her language skills and cultural understanding to ensure every participant is heard and feels comfortable.

Sega has also made significant contributions to the mental health field, authoring an article in Therapy Today and speaking at the BACP Refugee Week celebrations.

Sega's nomination recognises her outstanding contributions and positive impact on our community.
